Rather than having a bezel or prong setting like most rings, a tension ring uses the tension of the ring itself to keep the gemstone in place. The aim is to make the gem appear to ‘float’ without any prongs holding it fixed into a setting. The metal on either side of the gem has very tiny grooves cut into it, and these act as channels to hold the sides of the gemstone firmly but gently.
A tension ring exerts high pressure onto the stone. This is why most tension gemstones use extremely hard gems such as diamonds that can withstand a high level of pressure. By combining a strong gem with robust metal such as gold or platinum, the gem stays precisely where it's supposed to be.

Because it uses the same kind of metals and gemstones as other engagement rings, a tension engagement ring is easy to look after. The one thing you want to avoid is exposing it to any hard knocks, so if you're doing some heavy work around the house or taking part in a sport, it's best to take the ring off and keep it in a soft cloth bag or pouch. A gentle clean with warm, soapy water will be sufficient to remove any grease or dirt build-up. A wipe over with a soft cloth will bring the shine back and remove any day-to-day dust or grime.
